Our surroundings are wild, beautiful, and built for movement.
The Trade is based at Black Mountain Lodge in New Hampshire's Upper Valley—on an inspiring 2000-acre campus nestled at the western edge of the White Mountain National Forest.

Lodging and Location
The Mountain is a 2,000-acre outdoor playground and luxury wellness center with miles of mountain biking, backcountry skiing, and hiking trails and stunning views of the famed Mount Moosilauke. An auto and machine repair shop, tractor fleet, recreation center with high ropes course and climbing wall, apple orchard, and rotating livestock all make The Mountain a perfect setting for hands-on learning and real-world skills development.
Apprentices learn and live in a place where the natural world invites adventure and connection.
This land has always been a place of purpose. Once a dairy farm, The Mountain was transformed in 1976 by experiential education pioneers John and Joan Wolter, who saw its potential as a space for wellness, personal growth, and land stewardship.

For the past several decades, Jay Wolter has expanded his parents' vision for The Mountain to include The Upper Valley Stewardship Center, The Innstead Mountain Getaway, The Glades back country ski mountain, and--of course, The Trade. In keeping with The Mountain's broader mission to connect people to the land in meaningful, healing, and sustainable ways, The Trade offers young adults a place to reset, find direction, and build a life rooted in meaningful work and community engagement.
